Vegetarian and Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants
in Los Angeles County

JULY 2009

Editors' Note -- July 1, 2009:
Because of tests conducted by Quarry Girl in June 2009, we have found it necessary to use a new identification, Claims to Be Vegan, for some of the so-called "vegan" restaurants in the Los Angeles area. Testing has revealed casein (a milk protein) and/or egg in at least one item on each of their menus.

For the past few years we have felt a responsibility to call attention to the fact that some restaurants that have labeled themselves vegan may have items on their menus that are not vegan. We, ourselves, have been misled on occasion, and we apologize if we have passed on inaccuracies in our restaurant reviews.

Some of the imitation meat, chicken, and fish dishes featured in Asian vegetarian restaurants may contain whey, casein, egg, or refined sugar. Some of these products are made in Taiwan and carry no ingredient labels, making it difficult to know about the contents. Many vegetarian restaurants use soy cheeses that are not vegan, though they are vegetarian.

Often vegetarian restaurants hire serving attendants who are not knowledgeable about ingredients in their dishes. The ultimate responsibility lies with with you, the customer, to ask and ask again about ingredients that concern you. We'll do our best to be as informative as possible.

Faux meatballs, mock chicken, and vegan cheese make it easy to enjoy tasty vegan versions of their menu offerings. Pasta choices include Veggie Lo Mein, Eggplant Rotini, and Pasta Primavera. The tastes and textures are so much like the real thing, they just may have you guessing.

    Rajdhani (Vegetarian, Vegan Friendly)
Spacious and attractive, this Indian restaurant specializes in Gujarati-style dishes that offer a delightful digression from the familiar northern Indian cuisine. Gujarati cuisine includes little touches of sweetening to savory dishes along with a unique blend of spices. Located on the second floor of a small shopping center, the restaurant offers terrace dining for those who enjoy a relaxed, outdoor experience. The pre-fixe meals vary daily and provide a wide variety of offerings served "buffet style," meaning they will bring you as much as you wish. If they offer Potato Wadas or green pea and lentil Kachori, you'll be requesting extra servings of these deep-fried, very tasty appetizer balls. Udupi Palace (Vegetarian and Vegan)
Specializing in South Indian cuisine, this all-vegetarian family restaurant in "Little India" has somewhat limited choices for vegans. Though all the curries have yogurt and many items have cream, vegans can enjoy a large selection of the giant lentil crepes called Dosas, and the tasty rice pancakes called Uttapam. The Vegetable Rice Puri was exceptionally tasty. The deep fried Pakoras were perfect starters, but don't dip them into the cream laced cilantro sauce. Ambience is very simple, prices very reasonable.
